Harmony of Ubud, Bali.....................

HARMONY OF UBUD, BALI ........................................

The sun is exactly on top of Ubud sky, making pan dabreg's steps faster. A couple of clouds clot, rolling to the north. Some of them passing the sun.

Pan dabreg's sweat drops down, always he wipes with his sleeve. His mouth mumbles. Don't know what he speaks about.

His house is not so far from Ubud. Half an hour walk by foot, passing over a narrow bamboo bridge, turning the corner near the bamboo tress, then arriving in Ubud.

His hobby when the difficult era, era of war, he went to Klungkung, Gianyar, Tabanan, even to Gilimanuk. Sometimes he acted as courier for the patriots, delivering secret letters to other cities . Never was he caught by the enemy. Until Indonesian independence, he survived.

Now he never claims recognation. The other people would claim recognation for the struggle of Indonesian Independence, if in his situation . Some friends advise pan dabreg to go to the veteran's departement, so he can register as ex-patriot.

LITERATURE...............

LITERATURE.......................

Most literature is drived from Sankrit which was translated into old javanese or kawi around the 10th century. At that time, the javanese price, Erlangga ( who ruled bali through his brother ), declared that all balinese edict should be translated into Kawi Erlangga also oversaw the translations of the two great Hindu epic poems, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata from Sankrit. Today only dalang ( Shadow puppeteers ), priest and the older balinese understand Kawi, but the language is still celebrated in the puppet shows of the Wayang Kulit, in the modern Ramayana ballet, Wayang Wong, and in experts staged in dances and dramas.

The Ramayana is an old-fashioned story of the struggle between good and evil.Rama, the hero embodies virtue and strength, while his antagonist, Rawana, epitomises evil. The Mahabharata recalls the exploits and deads in the battle of the Bharata ( From ancient northern India ).
