Ubud, Bali.....................

Hidden Amid green forests and protected by lush valleys lies Ubud. Often touted as the cultural heart of Bali, many people flee the south in search of the real Bali and some never venture past Ubud. Despite the increase in tourism in the last ten years, Ubud remains a peaceful village where traditions are preserved.

History ..........................

Ubud dates back to the 8th century , when a Hindu priest, Rsi Markandeya, and his disciples discovered the intersection of two rivers - a good phenomenon for Hindus - and built a temple at the site. The temple is called Pura Gunung Lebah, and the village, Campuhan, means the " meeting of two rivers " . Further up the mountains, Ubud became the home of his diciples.

In the late 18th century, the Raja of Gianyar requested that the kingdom be protected by the Dutch. While the rest of Bali suffered under the hash policies of the Dutch, Gianyar propered. Cokorda Sukawati, a local priest, befriended young artists and enticed them to live in the village. The young sculptor lempad, an enemy of the Raja of Bedulu, accepted the price's offer, and assisted in the creation of the Puri Saren palace and the adjacent temple. The German artist, Walter Spice, accepted an invitation to make Ubud his home, and settled in Campuhan on the site of what is now the HotelTjampuhan. Miguel Covarrubias was enchanted by pictures of Bali, and Rudolph Bonnet heard about the island on the grapevine. Both artists made Bali their home.

In 1936, Spies and Bonnet founded the Pita Maha society for artist, under the auspices of Cokorda Sukawati. Although the group disbanded at the outbreak of war, an artistic collective-consciousness had evolved which was to augment and direct the village's cultural heritage in 1953, Cokorda Sukawati and Bonnet founded the Puri Lukisan Museum - a monument to the fine arts in Bali.

During the 1950s, Arie Smit, a Dutch painter, founded the Naive school of painters in Panestanan. The group was dedicated to drawing and painting subject ignoring conventional dictates. Han Snel, another Dutchman ingratiated himselft with the locals, and still lives in Ubud, as does Antonio Blanco.

Ubud is not only a concentration of Balinese talent, it is also a happy marriage between East and West. No doubt Bali will change as tourism increases but the balinese resilience and willingness to utilise foreign influences will hopefully enable the continuation of a rich culture heritage.
